IDS on Color Grading for Live Event Productions
#Enterprise
Virtual production is taking off rapidly in Hollywood, but enthusiasm for the format is also pouring over into the professional audiovisual (AV) space. More AV teams are turning to the approach to deliver blockbuster-caliber hybrid event experiences for everything from live concerts to product launches, esports competitions, and beyond.
While the technology applied for both is similar, the approaches vary. In on-set environments, cameras can shoot, pause, and reset at will, and issues can be fixed in post, whereas with live, there are no second chances. Immersive Design Studios has carved a niche for itself with its CANVAS platform, which leverages similar game engine and LED wall technology used in virtual production to support live event productions. The company recently prioritized achieving a cohesive look for broadcasts of these events, which is why it started using AJA ColorBox with Assimilate Live Looks for live grading. We chatted with Immersive Design Studios Co-Founder and CEO Thomas Soetens to learn more.

Zoomtopia winner of the EX Award for Best Hybrid Event of 2022
#Enterprise
Zoomtopia 2022 powered by CANVAS is the winner of the EX Award for best Hybrid Event of 2022!! 🎉 🥂 🎉 Congrats to our team at Immersive Design Studios and all the teams who collaborated to make this happen 🙌 !!
Immersive Design Studios took Zoomtopia’s opening keynote by Zoom CEO Eric Yuan to a whole new level this year. We combined the strength of the Zoom platform with an immersive experience powered by CANVAS to seamlessly blend Zoom participants, keynote presentations, live product demos, social media feeds and realtime Zoom chats & emoticons – all inside a 3D Unreal Engine Zoom-branded environment.
To achieve this highly responsive and larger-than-life virtual environment, we equipped the main stage with CANVAS to power a massive 20K LED wall. Throughout the keynote, from a pool of thousands of participants joining via Zoom, up to 30 appeared randomly on screen – not in a grid, but as 3D bubbles floating in virtual space surrounded by animated emojis, floating chat messages and live media presentations with 16K video backgrounds.
In fact, to create these responsive graphics, CANVAS pulled and translated via OSC live data such as the reactions and chat messages from the Zoom participants, as well as the web feeds from Zoomtopia’s social media.
The result? A one-of-a-kind immersive hybrid conference with rich visuals and a high level of audience engagement.
Parties involved in creating this hybrid event:
Media server platform: CANVAS
Conference platform: Zoom, Zoom ISO, Zoom OSC
CANVAS content production: Immersive Design Studios
Event Production: Four Moon Productions
Event Agency: Agency EA

CANVAS Platform Driving the Future of Hybrid Education
#Training & Education
To get there, College La Cité is continuing its long-standing partnership with Immersive Design Studios by investing in the firm’s latest generation CANVAS software platform, which has been powering the school’s ground-breaking in-class 360-degree interactive immersive experiences since 2018.
Excentricité is College La Cité’s 34,000-square-foot immersive learning pavilion. Its centerpiece – a 4,000-square-foot adaptable hub called The Studio – boasts a 252-foot wraparound screen and 360-degree sound, all powered by CANVAS. The CANVAS upgrade introduces the platform’s most advanced immersive technologies, along with Zoom, cloud and hybrid cloud delivery. “CANVAS makes it incredibly easy to bring interactive immersive experiences into classrooms, boardrooms or even onto the stage,” said Thomas Soetens, Co-Founder of Immersive Design Studios. “With a simple iPad, teachers and presenters can easily manage any combination of content (Zoom, Unreal Engine, 360 videos, keynotes, green screen, etc.), thereby engendering truly engaging and impactful interactions with audiences, live and virtual.”
“La Cité aims to be at the cutting edge of education,” said Pierre Paul Samson, Head of the Ideation and Creativity Office and Chief Digital & Technology Officer at Collège La Cité. “Our teachers love the user-friendly aspect of CANVAS and we can’t wait to experiment with new educational formats during our digital communication and media studies workshops, with students attending both in person and remotely.”

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is a 65,000 square-foot destination in midtown Manhattan featuring breathtaking views from 1,200 feet and the world’s largest exterior glass-floor elevators.
Our team has been working with SL Green for several years to help bring this project to fruition using CANVAS – first as a way for the architect studios KPF, Ghensler and Snohetta to visualize the building, then as an interactive sales tool to support SL Green with the leasing of the space, and finally to help design and visualize the final SUMMIT visitor experience with Kenzo and Atlantic Pictures. Now, we’re thrilled that a CANVAS-powered studio immerses visitors as they begin their Summit experience with a documentary about this new architectural gem.
